42CrMo4 |
Bars, Cold rolled stripsteel, Plates | Quench and tempering steels | SS 2244 | 1.7225 |
42CrMo4 is a type of steel that belongs to the group of chromium-molybdenum steels with a slightly higher carbon content than 25CrMo4. It is a versatile alloy steel that has excellent strength, toughness and hardenability, making it suitable for a variety of applications, including the manufacture of gears, crankshafts, axles and fasteners.
The addition of chromium and molybdenum gives 42CrMo4 its excellent strength and hardenability, while the carbon content provides good wear resistance and toughness. However, the higher carbon content makes it difficult to weld.
42CrMo4 is usually supplied in quenched and tempered condition, which means it is heat-treated to improve its properties. This heat treatment process involves heating the steel to a high temperature, followed by cooling in oil or water, and then tempering at a lower temperature to reduce brittleness and improve toughness.
Used for parts that are subject to mechanical wear.
