1.4828, also known as DIN X15CrNiSi20-12 or AISI 309, is a heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel.

1.4828 consists mainly of iron (Fe), chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni). It usually contains about 20-22% chromium and 12-15% nickel, together with small amounts of carbon (C), silicon (Si) and manganese (Mn). These alloying elements contribute to its high temperature strength and corrosion resistance.

A remarkable property of steel 1.4828 is its excellent resistance to high temperatures. It can withstand prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures without significant deformation or loss of mechanical properties. It can withstand temperatures up to 1100°C but is suitable for working temp. 950-1000°C in dry air.

Like other stainless steels, 1.4828 offers good corrosion resistance due to its high chromium content. It is resistant to oxidation, scaling and corrosion in various environments, including those containing acids and alkaline solutions.

Steel 1.4828 exhibits good mechanical properties, including high strength and toughness, even at elevated temperatures. This combination of strength and toughness allows it to maintain structural integrity and resist mechanical stresses, especially in high temperature applications.

In addition to its corrosion resistance, steel 1.4828 provides excellent oxidation resistance. The steel can maintain its structural integrity and surface finish even when exposed to high temperatures in oxidising atmospheres.

Widely used in heat exchangers, furnace components, kilns, boiler parts and exhaust systems in sectors such as petrochemicals, chemical processing and power generation.
