X90CrMoV18

UNS S44003 440B 1.4112

1.4112, also known as X90CrMoV18 or AISI 440B, is a martensitic, non-weldable, high carbon chromium steel.

The composition of 1.4112 usually contains about 16-18% chromium, 0.75-1.0% molybdenum and 0.85-0.95% carbon and small amounts of vanadium (V), together with other alloying elements such as manganese (Mn) and silicon (Si). This composition contributes to its hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance.

1.4112 belongs to the group of martensitic stainless steels, characterised by a martensitic microstructure formed by quenching and tempering processes. This structure gives the steel high hardness, strength and wear resistance.

One of the defining characteristics of steel 1.4112 is its high hardness. It can achieve hardness levels up to HRC 55-58 after heat treatment, making it suitable for applications requiring excellent wear resistance, such as cutting tools and knives.

Although this steel is not as corrosion resistant as austenitic stainless steels, 1.4021 offers moderate corrosion resistance in mild environments. Its chromium content provides some resistance to corrosion, but it can be susceptible to corrosion in aggressive environments such as those containing chlorides.

Martensitic stainless steels such as 1.4021 are generally magnetic under all conditions, which can be advantageous in applications where magnetic properties are desired, such as in magnetic bearings or certain industrial applications.

Due to its high hardness and wear resistance, steel 1.4112 is often used in applications where cutting tools, knives, surgical instruments and mechanical components are required. The steel is also used in industries such as automotive, aerospace and manufacturing for components that require strength and wear resistance.
